Usage of e-mail and network accounts is subject to the general university-wide computing policies.
To use many of our services, you must have a network account. Among other things, this gives you:
To avoid confusion in reading our support documention or in talking with others, please be aware of the following. Since our servers run GNU/Linux, network accounts are sometimes called “Linux accounts”; moreover, it is also common to call them “system accounts” or “e-mail accounts” or “puma accounts” or “gila accounts” (the latter two uses because the machines named “puma” and “gila” are used for remote access to accounts, so users tend to think of their accounts as actually being on one of those two machines).
Anyone directly affiliated with our department (faculty, staff, graduate students) may have an account. We also offer accounts to undergraduate math majors engaged in research projects with math faculty. Other people indirectly affiliated with the department (e.g., former graduate students, spouses, or people in other departments engaged in a math-related project) might be given an account upon special request. Finally, accounts named after an activity (as opposed to a person) are often set up to hold the websites and other material related to research groups or special-purpose projects within the department.
Simply contact the support staff with the request. Please include the following information about the person who will receive the account:
Once the account is created, we will use the existing e-mail address to inform the user of their new account name and random password, and ask them to then follow these instructions to get started using the new account.
Please see our account removal page for more information.
