How to change your local Linux password

Note: This information is only for users with a local account specific to a particular machine. For example, many users with Linux desktops or laptops in offices will have local accounts. Our lab systems, our systems in offices with multiple users, and our remotely-accessible gateway systems all use network accounts. For network accounts, please read how to change your network password.

How to change your local Linux password

1. Open a new terminal window. Type the word passwd.
   
2. Now enter your old local password for verification
3. Next, you will have to enter your new password
4. You will be asked to re-enter your password
5. Your password has been changed successfully

Note: Passwords that are too short or very similar to your account name or previous password might not be accepted. We have some tips on choosing a good password.
