I am Head of the Interdisciplinary Program in Applied Mathematics at the University of Arizona. Prior to my move to Arizona in 1992 I was a Professor of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics at Columbia University. I view applied mathematics as the embodiment of natural philosophy and enjoy the opportunity to work in many different areas of the mathematical, physical, life, and engineering sciences. My current research interests are focused on continuum mechanics and nonlinear elasticity with an emphasis on the application to biomedical and biomechanical problems, including the growth of micro-organisms. My past research interests have included quantum chaos, nonlinear dynamical systems, fluid mechanics, foams, polymer physics, the analytic structure of ordinary and partial differential equations (a.k.a the Painleve property), etc.
