Assignments for Math 302A, Section 5

Changes may be made in assignments from time to time. Such changes will be
announced in class and will generally be made on this web page at least one day before the assignme
nt is due.

The homework problems I grade will typically be selected from the ones that are not answered in the back of the book.

Reading:  Read sections 1.1 – 1.4 in the Textbook and write your answers to the questions from 1.1 in your notebook.

 

To hand in:  we didn’t get to it yet!

 

Thurs. 1/22

 

Explorations: 

  • Write up your solution of the handshake problem; include answers to the following:  1.  How many handshakes will there be in a group of 24 people (our class)?  2.  How many handshakes will there be in a group of n people?
  • Write up your solution of the Darts problem (Explorations book, 1.4 problem 1 #1 – 4.)

 

Homework 1:  Do text pgs 26-29 #3, 5, 14, 21a, 22d & f, 25, 30c, 39

 

*Please staple the Explorations as one assignment and the Homework as a separate assignment.

 

 

Tues. 1/27

 

Read:  textbook section 1.7 and pages 101 – 108 (from section 2.3)

 

Exploration:  With your group, finish the Alphabetia system and poster you began in class.  See page 39 of your Explorations book (Part 2 #1) for details on what this needs to include. 

 

Homework 2:  Do text pgs 54 – 57 #11, 12a, 30a

AND pgs 119 – 121 #2b, d, e & g, 3b, 12a & e  (delayed to Thursday)

Exploration:  Exploration 3.1 Part 2 #3:  do b, f and j.  Explain your thought process carefully for each of these.

 

Homework 2:  Do text pgs 54 – 57 #11, 12a, 30a

AND pgs 119 – 121 #2b, d, e & g, 3b, 12a & e

Read:  textbook pages 109 – 118 (from section 2.3)

 

Exploration:  Exploration 2.9.  Do Part 3 #2 & 3 and Part 4 #1, 2 & 4.  Explain your thought process for each conversion. 

 

Homework 3:  Do text pgs 120 – 121 #15b & c, 16b & d, 17a & i, 18b & f, 19, 29.  Again, explain how you thought about these.

Exploration 5.12:  Do Part 1 #1 (explain your reasoning for each) and do Part 3.

 

Exploration 5.13:  In Part 1, ignore the instructions; instead, for each of the 7 “Problems”, do the following:

(1)  Write a mathematical expression for the solution. 

(2)  Then, show one (or more) pictures that can help you find the answer.

(3)  Identify the answer for each problem based on your picture(s).

Exploration 5.10:  complete the table on page 112 (use reasoning – see notes from class).  Also, complete #7 on page 110 (if you tore this page out, the problems are listed in the PowerPoint from Thursday, 4/9).

Class Notes (fractions) are due on Exam day, Thursday, 4/16 by 3:00 pm.  I will be in my office from 2 – 3:00 if you want to turn them in after the exam.

Also, if you did not turn in Homework 13 and Exploration 5.10 on Tuesday, 4/14, they are due on Exam day, Thursday, 4/16 by 3:00 pm.
