Overview

The goal of this first network meeting is for everyone to familiarize themselves with the challenges and opportunities facing our students and programs at all levels (undergraduate, graduate, and faculty) and to begin a dialog about exploiting the opportunities and overcoming the challenges.

Format

Most of the meeting will be devoted to panel discussions in 90 minute blocks. Panelists will start with 20-30 minutes of remarks each, then we will have an open discussion. The emphasis is on exchange of information, not on formal presentations by the panelists.

9:30 - 11:00 Topic: Undergraduate research and capstone experiences. Panelists: Terry Blows (Director of REU, NAU) and Carlos Castillo-Chavez (Director of MTBI, ASU)
11:00 - 11:30 A short presentation on the Arizona Summer Program by Michael Tabor (Head of Applied Mathematics, UA) and Joceline Lega (Professor, UA)
11:30 - 12:00 Tour of UA Applied Mathematics Laboratory led by Michael Tabor
12:00 - 2:00 Lunch at a local restaurant
2:00 - 3:30 Topic: Recruiting undergraduates into the major and ensuring their success. Panelists: Michael Nakamaye (Undergrad Head, UNM) and Bill Velez (Associate Head for Undergraduate Affairs, UA)
3:30 - 5:00 Topic: What grad students should know about being a faculty member and CV feedback session. Panelists: Tom Gruszka (UA Applied Math graduate currently at WNMU) and Barbara Shipman (UA Math graduate currently at UT Arlington)
5:00 - 6:30 Topic: Inputs to and outputs from our graduate programs. Panelists: Maria Teodora Acosta (Professor and former Graduate Chair, TX State) and Doug Ulmer (Associate Head for the Graduate Program, UA)
6:30 - Brief wrap-up

Location and Travel

The meeting will take place in room 401N in the Mathematics building on the University of Arizona campus. Coffee and pastries will be available from 9:00 am.

There will be an informal dinner for those staying Saturday night. Anyone arriving on Friday and looking for company should contact a member of the VIGRE management team.
