This talk is an orientation for people who have never used TeX or LaTeX. The first part will explain the relation between primitive TeX, plain TeX, and LaTeX. It will also explain the editor--TeX--dvi--print cycle. The second part will show how to start using LaTeX in the simplest possible contexts.
