Syllabus and Homework

What's this course about?

This course is about elementary mathematics—functions, algebra, geometry—viewed from an advanced perspective. We will see how concepts that arise early in the study of mathematics evolve at higher levels, and how simple math problems can lead to sophisticated insights. We will learn to make connections between different areas of mathematics by identifying underlying structures and principles.

Course Mailing List

I make announcements, and you can discuss problems with each other, on the course mailing list. If you have already received emails from me then you are already subscribed. If not, you can subscribe by sending an email to listserv@listserv.arizona.edu with the words "subscribe math407 firstname lastname" in the body of the message (substitute your own first name and last name, of course!). Once subscribed, you can post messages to the list by sending an email to math407@listserv.arizona.edu. For more help, go here.

Homework Help

If you are stuck, send me a question by email or by instant message using AIM or iChat. My screen name is wgmccallum@mac.com (you might need to send me an email to tell me to turn on instant messaging).

Homework and Quiz policy

Exams There are three midterm exams in class: Wednesday 15 September, Wednesday 13 October, and Wednesday 10 November. There is a final exam on Wednesday, December 15, 2:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m., in the same room in which classes are held.
