What's this course about?
This course is about elementary mathematics—functions, algebra,
geometry—viewed from an advanced perspective. We
will see how concepts that arise early in the study of mathematics
evolve at higher levels, and how simple math problems can lead to
sophisticated insights. We will learn to make connections between
different areas of mathematics by identifying underlying structures
and principles.
Course Mailing List
I make announcements, and you can discuss problems with each other, on the course mailing list.
If you have already received emails from me then you are already subscribed.
If not, you can subscribe by sending an email to
listserv@listserv.arizona.edu with the words
"subscribe math407 firstname lastname" in the body of the message (substitute your own first name and
last name, of course!). Once subscribed, you can post messages to the list by sending an
email to math407@listserv.arizona.edu. For
more help, go here.
Homework Help
If you are stuck, send me a question by email or by instant message using
AIM or iChat. My screen name is wgmccallum@mac.com (you might need to send me an email to tell me to turn
on instant messaging).

Grades
The three midterms and the homework are each worth 100 points,
and the final exam is worth 200 points. This gives a total of 600 points. Your score out of 600
be converted to a percentage, and then grades assigned on the usual scale: an A for 90% or above, a B for
80% or above, a C for 70% or above, a D for 60% or above, and an E for anything less than
60%.
Homework and Quiz policy
- Each Friday you will hand in a written assignment (usually a
proof) and take a 10 minute quiz. The assignment is due by 4:00
p.m. in Math 108.
- Go here to find out the
written assigment, the practice problems from the text on which the
quiz will be based.
- Written assignments should be legible, with pages stapled
together and with your name and and the textbook section number at the
top of each page. Answers should include reasoning explained in
complete sentences. I will return homework not meeting these standards
ungraded.
- I will not accept late assignments. It is your responsibility to
remember to hand in your homework.
- You may discuss assignments with me in office hours, with
your fellow students, or on the course listserv. However, the
answer you hand in must be in your own words.
- Weekly assignments will be graded out of 10 points, quizzes out of 5.
Exams There are three midterm exams in class: Wednesday 15
September, Wednesday 13 October, and Wednesday 10 November. There is a
final exam on Wednesday, December 15, 2:00 p.m.–4:00
p.m., in the same room in which classes are held.
