Arizona Teacher Initiative
The Arizona Teacher Initiative is funded by a 5-year,$4.8M National Science Foundation Math and Science Partnership grant (award 0634532, PI Daniel Madden).
The program provides an innovative and dynamic opportunity for graduate students and teacher partners to collaborate on the development of novel, rigorous and relevant material for K-12 mathematics courses.
Masters of Arts Degree in Middle School Mathematics Teaching Leadership
A three-year part-time degree for middle school mathematics teachers with elementary certification.
- Two years of courses in mathematics and education taken over the summer and part-time during the school year
- One year of fieldwork—six units devoted either to a practicum or a thesis
- Four 4-unit mathematics courses (The Number Line, Algebra, Geometry, Probability and Statistics), taught by a mathematician and high school teacher team
- Two 3-unit education courses (chosen from Research on the Learning of Mathematics, Disciplined Inquiry in Education, and Language and Culture in the Teaching of Mathematics)
- 3 to 4 units in Mentoring
ATI Math Specialist in Mathematics Teacher Mentoring
A one-year, full-time residential program, with a prerequisite of secondary certification or equivalent.
- Attend Proseminar in Mathematics and Teaching
- Assist in Master's program
- Take courses in the mathematics major
- Work with the Center for Recruitment and Retention's mentoring program
Postdoctoral Fellowship in Teacher Preparation
A three-year fellowship, modeled on the department's Teaching Postdoctoral Fellowship, for recent mathematics Ph.D.'s.
- Attend Proseminar in Mathematics and Teaching
- Assist in Master's program
- Teach courses in mathematics major
- Opportunities to take part in departmental outreach activities
