How to Bring Your Research to the Classroom
- Give a presentation on your research work.
- Organize a tour of a lab on campus (see options below), or bring pictures showing lab work and/or experiments.
- Tell the students how a mathematician thinks, approaches problem solving, and how s/he deals with mathematics in general. For instance, emphasize the importance of understanding mathematics as opposed to memorizing it; make it clear that it is normal (and in fact expected) to think about a mathematical problem before coming up with an answer, that asking "why" is a natural question, etc.
Field Trip Options
- Biosphere 2, Visitor Information
- Applied Mathematics Experimental Laboratories, University of Arizona
- Mirror Lab, University of Arizona
- Flandrau Science Center, University of Arizona
- Sonia Kovalevski High School Mathematics Day, University of Arizona
- Visits to another school: elementary school students could visit a middle school; middle school students a high school; high school students could come to campus. Since we have fellows in each type of school, such trips should be easy to organize.
- Tour a dormitory on campus.
- Have students meet with a panel of undergraduates to discuss what it is like to be in college.
