Math 587, Asymptotic Methods and Perturbation Theory
This course is a broad overview of one of the fundamental tools used in applied mathematics. Topics will
include:
- Approximations for algebraic and ordinary differential equations, bifurcations.
- Approximations of integrals (stationary phase, steepest descents, etc.)
- Methods of matched asymptotics and multiple scales (including WKB expansion)
- Homogenization
- Applications in mechanics and material science, math biology, pattern formation, nonlinear optics,...
