Text: We will use the paperback edition of Larry C. Grove's book "Algebra" published by Dover.In the first semester of this one year long course will try to cover Chapters 1, 2 (group theory and ring theory) and parts of Chapter 3 (field theory).
Exams: There will be one midterm exam and a final exam. The midterm exam will be worth 100 point and the final exam will be worth 200 points.
The midterm will be Friday, October 30 and the University has scheduled the final exam for Monday, December 14, from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm, MATH 501.
Homework: Homework will be assigned regularly. Selected homework will be graded and a final score equivalent to one test, 100 points, will be assigned.
Grades: The total number of points available on exams and homework is 400.
The point cutoffs for grades will be no higher than those set forth in the following table
360 points (90%) for A
320 points (80%) for B
280 points (70%) for C
240 points (60%) for D
