Understanding pattern formation
For other experimental pictures, see the following sections of
the text:
- “The master equation”, page 169 (under FLUIDS)
- “Jumping beans”, page 202 (under GRAINS),
as well as the color plates between pages 24 and 25.
Pattern formation is modeled in terms of nonlinear partial
differential equations. The following three slides show
pictures of stripes in liquid crystals, together with a numerical
simulation of such patterns. Three types of defects are shown,
two of which separate regions with different stripe orientation.
