BACHELOR OF SCIENCE - GENERAL / APPLIED OPTION
2004-2005
Students completing the BS degree in Mathematics must have second semester proficiency in a second language.

The BS degree is a science intensive degree and to fulfill the Natural Science General Education requirements, students must complete one of the following sequences of laboratory science courses:
  • CHEM 103A & 104A, 103B & 104B
  • MCB 181 & 181L, ECOL 182
  • PHYS 131, 181, 132, 182
  • PHYS 141, 142 (3 units) or 241
  • PHYS 151, 152

For the BS degree, students must complete one of the following sequences of physics courses:
  • PHYS 131 & 181, 132 & 182
  • PHYS 141, 142 (3 units) or 241
  • PHYS 151, 152
OR complete six units of course work outside the Mathematics Department, approved by the major advisor, that require MATH 124 or MATH 125 or a higher mathematics course as a corequisite or prerequisite.

Note: A student may satisfy both the Tier I Natural Science courses and the Physics requirement by taking one of the physics sequences.

The Tier 2 general education requirement for natural science is satisfied by the major.

This option is meant for those students who intend to enter the job market upon graduation. Students who intend to use their mathematical skills should choose a minor in science or engineering in consultation with an advisor. Students choosing this option and an appropriate minor, or double major, can also go on to graduate school in a field of science or engineering.

THE CORE COURSES: Should be completed by the end of the sophomore year.

OPTION COURSES
Both of the following courses:
MATH 422  Advanced Applied Analysis

MATH 485   Mathematical Modeling

One of the following three sequences:
MATH 454   Intermediate Ordinary Differential Equations
and
MATH 456   Applied Partial Differential Equations

or

MATH 464   Theory of Probability
and
MATH 466   Theory of Statistics

or

MATH 475a  Mathematical Principles of Numerical Analysis
and
MATH 475b  Mathematical Principles of Numerical Analysis

And a fifth 400-level course, chosen in consultation with your faculty advisor.
