Mathematics Related to the Circle Sketch
For regular polygons (i.e. polygons with equal length sides and equal angle measures), as the number of sides increases and the perimeter remains fixed, the area increases and becomes closer and closer to the area of a circle. For a proof that the circle is the optimal shape with respect to maximizing area for a given perimeter, see Courant & Robbins (1996).
