It forms the basis for new, non-invasive medical diagnoses without using
exploratory surgery. It helps scientists detect changes in the Sahara Desert
and other environments from outer space. Law enforcement agents use it to solve
murder cases. And computer gearheads use it to develop graphics for web
pages, television and newspapers.
It is math, and it's everywhere. "Mathematics and Imaging" was the theme for Mathematics Awareness Week 1998. The result of a collaborative effort, this visually rich and thought-provoking collection of exhibits showcases the application of mathematics to a wide range of disciplines, including everything from tree rings to toxicology.
