Galileo and Pathfinder Images
Department of Planetary Sciences
The Galileo spacecraft, launched on October 18, 1989, sent back these remarkable images of Europa after entering Jupiter's orbit in December of 1995. Europa is one of Jupiter's moons, roughly the same size as our own. Each of these images, originally about 1 MB in size, took almost a month to reach Earth due to a problem with the deployment of the Galileo antenna.
Below are examples of the dramatic ice extrusions that cover the surface of Europa.
