Will we really be using email and the web site?
Yes. You must have an email address, which you check regularly. I use this to make announcements and answer questions. I use the web site to post grades, dates of exams, homework, etc.

Do you grade on a curve?
No. The way I calculate grades is explained in the Information Sheet, and I don't deviate from it. Thus, it is possible for the entire class to get As, or the entire class to get Es. I have given all As before (to a graduate class). I have never given all Es (and don't want to start now).

What do students find the most difficult about this course?
The students who have the most trouble are usually the ones who don't have, or have forgotten, the prerequisite algebra and calculus skills. That is why I test those skills early, and that is why I wrote Are You Ready For ODEs? Also, some students have trouble making an 8 A.M. class (which this is) and so they miss lectures and quizzes. That is a recipe for disaster. Finally, some students start preparing for a test the night before. That does not work in this class it usually does not work in any math class.

Where can I get the solutions to the exercises?
Solutions to the odd-numbered exercises can be found in the Student's Solutions Manual, which is on sale in the bookstore and on reserve in the UA Main Library.

Hey, dude. Where is the Library?
Head north from the math building until you reach the mall (that's the big grassy area with construction going on), then turn east (right, towards the construction). The first big building with lots of books in it, on the south (right) side of the mall, is the Science Library. The second such building is the Main Library. If you pass the construction area, you've gone too far. Turn around and try again. You can also consult a UA campus map.

I, like, missed a quiz, you know. When is the make-up?
There are no make-ups for quizzes. Your lowest two quiz scores are dropped.

Can I take the final exam early?
No.

What are grade distributions like in this class?
It varies from semester to semester, and depends on a number of factors. In Fall 1998, there were 5 As, 6 Bs, 5 Cs, 4 Ds, and 6 Es. In Spring 1999, there were 4 As, 8 Bs, 10 Cs, 0 Ds, and 4 Es.

When are your office hours?
MWF 7:30 - 8:00 (in Math 101), MWF 8:50 - 9:15 (in Math 314).

I can't make your office hours. What do I do?
Either see me after class, or e-mail me, to make an appointment. However, please be on time for the appointment.

Do you give extra-credit?
No. The way I calculate grades is explained in the Information Sheet, and I don't deviate from it.

I missed a class. Will you please give the lecture again, for me alone?
No. However, I will tell you what sections of the book I covered, and after you have read them, I'll be very happy to answer any questions you have.

Is there a common final?
No.

Is the final comprehensive?
Yes.

I always seem to run out of time in 50-minute tests. What can I do?
All my 50-minute tests are worth 50 points. Each test question has the number of points it is worth alongside it. Thus, if you spend more than 10 minutes on a question worth 10 points, you are going to run into time problems. The final is worth 100 points, but you have 120 minutes. Thus, if you work on the same principle, you will have 20 minutes remaining to check your work. Of course, bring a watch. Finally, don't waste time erasing mistakes just put a line through them.

Do you spend class-time reviewing the material before tests?
No.

I've averaged 50% on all 4 tests and the quizzes. What do I need on the final to get an A in the course?
You cannot get an A, a B, or a C. You need to score at least 84% to get a D in the course.

I hear you are a great instructor, so I registered in your class. However, my work schedule will only allow me to come to your Wednesday lectures. Will this have any impact on my grade? If so, what can we do?
Yes. You should change to a section that fits in with your work schedule, so that you can attend all the lectures. (The open sections can be found here.) Whether or not I'm a great instructor will have no impact on you if you are not present.
