Welcome to Math 485!
This course is about building mathematical models of physical, biological, and social phenomena. We will discuss the basic ingredients mathematical models and techniques for analyzing and validating models, including both paper-and-pencil techniques and computer simulations.
The course combines lectures, computer laboratories, and group projects. Each group of 4-5 students will work on a modeling project over the course of the semester. Not only are you expected to build a mathematical model and analyze it, you are also expected to communicate the results clearly and effectively, both in writing and in oral presentations.
Here are a list of project topics and examples of student posters from the past. See course policy for information about grading.
