Moth Math: Olfactory Cell Models in Manduca sexta
Based on the results of the simulations it was determined that the best explanation was the "Permeated Wall" model, which allowed for some leakage through the glial cell covering, but did not exclude drainage through the "mouth" of the system.
Neurobiologists can now target their experimental investigation of glial cells, having identified the proper course of action to pursue. Their research may one day help us to better understand the human olfactory system. And they owe it all to Math!
