Week of September 12
- Reading:
- Lesson 6 (unedited, rough).
- First Hour Exam, September 12. Some
review materials: Exam 1, Exam2, and Final
Exam from last year's course. Also, some random algebra problems. These review
materials are not intended to be comprehensive, and some of them
include topics we haven't covered yet. But they will give you a
general idea of what sort of thing to expect. There will also be
some questions on the triangle problem; see the solutions from last
week.
Week of September 19
- Reading: 3.1
- Homework: 3.1.1 nos. 2, 3, 6; 3.1.2 no. 6
- Lesson 7: extended analysis of the catch-up problem, pages
76–78. Lesson 8: discussion of functions and equations. Here
are some notes by Dick
Stanley on this subject.
Week of September 26
- Reading: 3.2
- Homework: 3.2.3 nos. 5, 6; 3.2.4 nos. 1, 4
- Lessons 9 & 10: Ben Levitt discussed families of functions
(pages 91–93) and
logarithms, including how to derive the properties of logarithms
from the exponent laws (pages 98–100).
Week of October 3
- Reading: 3.3
- Homework: Lesson 11: rates of growth, expressing functions in
forms that show the growth rate, comparing different growth rates by
taking the ratio of two functions (section 3.2.4). Lesson 12: finite
differences and polynomial fitting (section 3.3.2).

- Second Hour Exam, October 10:
This is a take-home exam, due Monday October 17. You must do one of
the Chapter Projects 3, 4, or 6 on page 130. You can discuss your
project with me but not with other students.
