From public lectures to tutoring, the Department of Mathematics at the University of Arizona prides itself on a long and excellent tradition of community engagement. Within this unique umbrella of opportunities is the Center for Retention and Recruitment of Mathematics Teachers (CRR), a University outreach center created to address the shortage of qualified Math teachers and to promote impactful math teaching and learning.

This upcoming January, CRR is thrilled to celebrate 21 years of Mathematics Educator Appreciation Day (MEAD), Arizona’s Largest Mathematics Education event. MEAD 2025 will take place on January 25th and welcome educators from all over Arizona. Along with a variety of guest speakers, University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella will also say a few words.

The event is FREE for all attendees. In order to maximize accessibility, it will be a hybrid event with both in-person and virtual options to partake in 140 facilitated sessions by more than 190 presenters. Among the many incentives provided, attendees have the opportunity to gain a professional development certificate for each session attended. An impressive track record of sponsors keeps the event on the radar of a plethora of Arizona institutions, programs, and organizations.

Over the years, MEAD has served thousands of educators. Featured in College of Science News and Lo Que Pasa, it is no surprise the event continues to grow. Teachers are the primary speakers at MEAD in order to not only appreciate but also engage attendees.

The crown jewel of the event is the keynote luncheon. This year’s speaker is Elham Kazemi, a professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Washington. “She studies children’s mathematical thinking and learning experiences in classrooms, the teacher’s role in facilitating discussions, and how teacher educators design and lead environments so that teachers learn from and with their students.” (crr.math.arizona.edu

Outside of MEAD, CRR offers year-round professional learning opportunities for K-16 educators including workshops, seminars, summer institutes, classroom-based coaching, new teacher coaching, teacher leader development, learning labs, AP Practice Exam Day, and community and family events.
