Where Mathematics Meets Opportunity: Industry Advisory Board Meeting Returns for Fourth Year

The School of Mathematical Sciences is pleased to share that the annual Industry Board Meeting (IAB) is returning for its 4th year in a row on September 24th and 25th. Established in 2023, the 2 day event aims to connect students with industry and corporate colleagues, providing career advice and networking opportunities in non-academic sectors.
This year, the event is centered around Non-Academic Careers in Mathematical & Data Sciences in the time of AI. Attendees can expect a keynote colloquium, lightning talks, and a variety of workshops.
Department alumna Angie Gonzales, Director of Data Science and AI at McGraw Hill, will be giving this year’s colloquium talk. Her talk, titled “Transferring Math Skills to EdTech Problems and To Grow Your Career” will discuss the mathematics behind measuring student learning, with a focus on the challenge of transferability between learning systems. The presentation will also include tips for marketing mathematical skills, matching strengths to the problems needing solutions, and turning tasks into growth opportunities.
“Keep transferring your skills into new problems and environments and grow while you do it,” Angie noted in the talk’s abstract.
Meeting attendees can also expect lightning talks from IAB members discussing their experiences with math in industry followed by a presentation from the College of Science Career Center.

Finally, a true highlight of the event, industry job readiness workshops led by board members centered around AI. This more hands on feature of the event programming allows students to go more in depth into the overarching themes of the meeting. In this case, AI.
