The spectral theory of Jacobi operators has intimate connections to integrable lattice systems and in particular infinite families of commuting discrete conservation laws.This is now reasonably well understood in some special cases, such as operators of scattering class. In this talk we discuss some new results in the spectral theory of these operators that taps into the classical theory of a subclass of Jacobi polynomials to go beyond scattering theory.
